1. What services are provided by a forensic psychiatrist ?
Expert witnesses give their opinion about a specific issue. The forensic psychiatrist provides a detailed report which answers to specific questions. He has no therapeutic role.
2. What is the scope of forensic psychiatry ?
The three major areas in forensic psychiatry are criminal, civil and insurance proceedings. Expert witnesses may also give their opinion about driving ability or the practise of a specific profession.
3. Who can ask for a forensic psychiatry evaluation ?
With the exception of the domain of the insurances, the forensic psychiatrist can be appointed only by judicial authorities, such as a judge or a prosecutor, or in certain cases by administrative authorities.
